Urban Autism Solutions Part II – Carli’s Campaign

Last December, I received a call from The Cove School asking if Jane and I would be interested in creating an internship for one of their graduating seniors. The answer was “absolutely!”

The Cove School founded in 1947 is a pioneer in the field of learning disabilities. It’s near and dear to my heart for Doug was a student at Cove for over 9 years.

So in January we sat down with Carli’s job coach, Marla Altshul, to put together a social media internship culminating with a fund raising campaign for Urban Autism Solutions.

Carli asked me to share her letter below:

My name is Carli Kaufman. I am a senior here at Cove School. I have been at Cove since my freshman year. I am still very private about my disabilities but I am learning to self- advocate for myself and make others aware of people with disabilities.

One of my independent living goals is to learn to cook. Cooking shows independence. It shows that we can begin to take care of ourselves. It’s hard! I’ve burned pans, I try to follow a recipe, sometimes I use too much or not enough salt; I’ve even set off the smoke alarm!

For people with disabilities, the struggle is real; some have limited vision or difficulty reading and understanding labels or recipes. According to the most recent U.S Census, about 1 in 5 people in the U.S.  have a disability. That’s about 50 million people!

Carli’s Campaign

the zen of slow cooking provides people with disabilities the opportunity to create and cook meals in a slow cooker. the zen of slow cooking brings globally inspired spice blends to slow cookers and Instantpots. Each package includes 2 spice packets, enough to prepare 2 meals.

During the month off April, the zen of slow cooking is teaming up with The Cove School to raise awareness of autism. A percentage of each purchased order through the campaign “the zen of slow cooking Supports Urban Autism Solutions” will go to support Urban Autism Solutions.

Zen Moment

When I was younger I was looking for this magic meaning of life. It’s very simple now. Making the lives of others better, doing something of lasting value. That’s the meaning of life, it’s that simple.
