Giving Thanks: Season of Growth Part 2

I remember when my son, Doug, was just three years old and received the Planet Access TInrecommendation that he attend an early intervention program.

We had just moved to Orlando from Atlanta. I was excited to explore such a warm climate after a childhood in the Midwest. This news was not only heartbreaking but also cast a shadow over our years in Florida.

My sister flew down to help me get organized as I prepared Doug for his next chapter.  I was very teary when we looked for the most comfortable sleeping blanket and picked out a Winnie the Pooh lunch box.  The first day I dropped him off I felt so sad. It was such a contrast to how carefree my older son’s preschool years had been. I knew we needed to do whatever it took to give Doug the skills he needed to understand the world…language, mobility, socialization.

The first few months at pick up time his teacher spent a long time telling me all the things he didn’t do right that day.  Finally, one day I mustered up some courage and after she went through her daily list. I quietly asked, “Didn’t Doug do anything well today?  She was surprised by the question and paused. I said “He never smiled?  He didn’t hug you?”  She hesitated, then said, “Yes, he did give me a hug,”  to which I replied, “Then I think that’s a pretty good day.”

At that moment, not only did my relationship with his teacher change, but also the way I viewed Doug. After 3 years of doctors telling me how far behind he was in his development, I decided to shift my energy from fearing for his future to having faith; and shift my focus from a limiting belief pattern, to one that had no limits.

It is in this spirit, I continue the story we began in September with the online launch of our Zen Blends. I want to announce our new relationship with Planet Access. Planet Access was founded in 1997 to create training and employment opportunities for adults with disabilities.

Now, as soon as Jane finishes crafting our organic spice blends in the test kitchen, she heat seals them, and brings them to Planet Access. It is there where they are packaged by our “zen team.”

We have four young adults, who enthusiastically place the blends in our tins, label them, add ribbon and seal them. For some of them this is their first real work experience. They all take great pride in creating an outstanding product.

So during this holiday season we’re encouraging you to buy some “Zen Blends.”  Not only do they make great hostess gifts, teacher gifts and stocking stuffers, but they are also providing the opportunity for work and a bit of financial independence to some wonderful young adults.

On a personal note during this month of giving thanks, I’m grateful to Doug for opening me up to a world of endless possibilities and to my business partner, Jane McKay, for helping me make my dream come true.
